The main historic center in Florence, is significantly small where people can easily walk around with their foot. Most of the streets at Florence are often one-way or pedestrian, and using a car is not advisable since you cannot find much place for parking. There are few electric buses that link the roads of main key areas. In order to plan for your movements within the city, you can better get the map from any of the five tourism information centers. There are many hotels that provide their own maps and so you can get from those hotels, in case you are far away from those tourist offices.
By Bus:
The usual public transportation in Florence is always used. ATAF and LI-NEA runs the local city buses (orange buses) and so you can get the local and multiple-ride tickets from any of the authorized ATAF sales points like bars, newsagents, tobacconists or any preferred ATAF booth located in Piazza Stazione. ATAF buses are slightly different with three doors, where people can get into the bus via the front and back door and can get off through the middle door. There is an automatic “ticket validating” machine placed inside the bus, where you need to put your ticket into the machine to validate. Once you put your ticket, the date and time is printed on your ticket that specifies the ticket’s validity.
It is a must to validate your ticket or else you will be charged with heavy fine. There are tourists who say “I don’t know” and so they are heavily charged with fine that is higher than the ticket cost. So it is always advisable to purchase more tickets and use them when you need. The cost of each ticket is €1,20 and is valid for 70 minutes. Once you get into the bus and you are without a ticket then you can easily get it from the bus driver by paying € 2,00 (You will not be given any change, so always provide the exact change). For more details: If you would like to know more information on this then you can contact by calling the “ProntoAtaf” hotline toll-free (800 424500) if you are within Italy or you can also check out www.ataf.net website for more info. The ATAF booth under the bus shelter (found towards the left of your station exit) located in Piazza Stazione sells tickets, clarifies your doubts, provides you more information and also gives you the bus routes map.
By Bike:
You can experience the exact adventure when you move around Florence on a bike. Similar to me there are many Florentines who roam around Florence with their partner as bike and so they would not feel the loneliness. Though this bike ride is adventurous, there is also a danger. You may get some problems and accidents when you make some right or left turns. I have experienced so many accidents when making turns and so, I advise you to be more careful while enjoying the ride. When you visit historical centers of Florence then you need to shift to a bicycle as many areas are sealed and so you are not allowed to enter with your bike. This safety measure is taken to avoid motor traffic. If you are not having any two wheelers for the ride then you can rent a bike if you wish to roam in Florence and have fun.
Since there are not bike paths in the historical center, you need to take a different path that is along the main street. If you plan to take ride outside the center then it is advisable to go through the bikes path available in the map, provided by the Florence’s city council website
By Car
There are problems visiting the historical center when you choose the car ride. Without a ZTL permit all the vehicles are banned to enter the city from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. If you would like to roam around with your car then you need to inform the hotel in advance so that they will help you in getting the pass for your vehicle by passing your vehicle details to the local police. So in this way you can enter the place with your own vehicle. The other option is that, you can hire a car with driver who can take you to the inner and outer part of Florence without any special pass.
